Word of the Day: Please Pick One
I've been mulling over the problem of how to write another Word of the Day post after the fiasco that resulted from my last attempt. Yes, yes, I have been reading The Globe and Mail but it's not helping!! So many words, so many more distractions. It could drive one to shopping, or Sudoku, or painting The Big Guy's bathroom, or cleaning up after a sick dog,
or crocheting dishcloths, or writing in my pain diary for my massage therapist, or watching Doctor Who episodes online, all of which occupied most of my last few days. Did you know that last night there was a Blue Moon? No wonder things have been crazy lately.
So, to help me out, you are going to choose a word from the list below, make your choice known by leaving a comment, and then I will write about the word.
If you would prefer, like most of my immediate family who sometimes like to read my posts but can't be bothered to sign up with Vox and actually write me some encouraging (or disparaging) comments, to communicate via private email or telephone then feel free to do so. I await your choice.
After some indeterminate yet appropriate period of time, I will tally up the votes and write the next Word of the Day post. No votes, no word.
I too am allowed to vote and, following in the footsteps of Magna International's CEO, Frank Stronach (What the heck are you doing making deals with the Russians, Frank!?!), my votes are worth more than anyone else's. [Disclosure: Yes, I own shares in Magna International. No, my shareholder votes aren't worth much.]
But don't let that stop you. Vote anyway. It's the Canadian way.
Here are the words. These words were all selected from a single column written by Harry Koza for The Globe and Mail's Report on Business, May 18th edition.
- spalling
- desultorily
- doorstopper
- cockles
- homers
- arriviste
- exogenous
- continuum
- leverage
- spreads
- junk
- commensurate
- whammy
- hitherto
- bruited
- axiom
- semiotic
- nifty
- derivative
Vote now. Vote often.

I vote for spalling because I have no idea what it means. And for bruited because I like the word.....
Good choices!
I will reveal what the column was about when I write the post. Maybe I should give bonus points to people who guess correctly. I've been thinking about including a copy of the entire text. It was hilarious! At least I found it funny. But then I have an odd sense of humour...
