October.
"October. This is one of the peculiarly dangerous months to speculate in stocks in. The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August and February." --Mark Twain, shortly before filing for bankruptcy in 1894.
I have a short list of stocks that I watch, waiting for prices to fall to the point where I want to buy. This morning I saw Mark Twain's famous quote in the newspaper and, with contrarian optimism, went online at my discount brokerage account to see where my wishlist stocks were at. Some of them did indeed have very attractive prices. But I chickened out and didn't buy anything.
